07/04/2008 - San Cristóbal Tunnel (Chile)

In the presence of the Chilean Public Works Minister, the San Cristóbal Tunnel was inaugurated

The San Cristóbal tunnel, the most modern viaduct in Chile, was opened on 4 July in the presence of the Chilean Minister of Public Works. It is to link the north and south-east of Santiago, in just three minutes, between the La Pirámide area, in the districts of Huechuraba and Recoleta, and the intersection of Avenida El Cerro with Los Conquistadores and Lo Saldes Bridge, in the district of Providencia.

The structure, fitted with state-of-the-art technology, has involved an investment of US$125 million, with a system of two parallel tunnels each 1.8 km long, and 2.2 km of outer roads.

According to a decision by the committee of ministers responsible for cities and spatial planning, the San Cristóbal tunnel will first operate on a trial basis, with a restricted flow of south-north traffic, i.e. from Los Conquistadores in the district of Providencia towards Avenida El Salto in the districts of Huechuraba and Recoleta.

With the opening of the San Cristóbal tunnel, the urban motorway system is for the first time applying a scheme for unified receipts from more than one concession, thanks to a private agreement with Autopista Vespucio Norte, which is to bill both companies? receipts and is also going to open its customer services to users of the new tunnel. This milestone is a first step towards the unification of services across motorways.
