 05/10/2011 A308 Iznalloz–Darro (Spain) Awarded

Iridium is awarded the thirty-year concession for the A-308 dual carriageway from Iznalloz (A-44) to Darro (A-92) in the Autonomous Community of Andalucía, with an investment of 198.7 million Euros. This contract is the very first to be made via a public-private collaboration scheme for a highway infrastructure in this Community.

On the 10th of May the Public Works and Dwelling Commission awarded the construction, operation and conservation of the A-308 dual carriageway from Iznalloz to Darro in Granada Province via the Governing Council of the Public Works Agency of the Andalucía Government. This high-capacity highway infrastructure was awarded to the group lead by Iridium with 40% participation. This award is the first to be made via a public-private collaboration scheme for a highway infrastructure in Andalucía.

The investment for the A-308 dual carriageway amounts to 198.7 million Euros, which the autonomous administration has to repay the company by means of an annual 20.72 million Euro payment, which includes the execution, operation and conservation of the infrastructure during a thirty-year period.

This project is expected to create 1,700 jobs. The proposed works start date is in the first quarter of 2012, after a period during which the construction project and expropriation process must be completed. The execution period is 32 months.

This project is for 37 kilometres that will join the A-92 and A-44 dual highways towards Jaén – Bailén – Madrid, which are two of the main high-capacity arterial highways that form the essential interior roadway system for Andalucía. The new A-308 Iznalloz to Darro dual carriageway will avoid long-distance traffic having to pass through the Granada metropolitan area and the Port of Mora, providing greater safety and comfort to the journey between the autonomous community and the Almeria coast, reducing it by 25 kilometres.

The solution of doubling the A-308 takes maximum advantage of the existing autonomous highway, except at its start and end junctions with the A-44 and the A-92 and where it passes through Darro.

The route contemplates junctions at Iznalloz, Píñar, Bogarre, A-401, Huélago and Darro. Moreover, there will be 7 viaducts, 18 overpasses, 5 underpasses and 49 drainage works. The most important viaduct is the one crossing the Arroyo de la Cañada, which is 300 metres long and will be located to the north of the Iznalloz Municipality and this will maintain the existing A-308 viaduct as the right-hand side road.
