On the 23rd of July 2011, with the presence of the Ministry for Territory and Sustainability of the Government of Catalonia, the concessionary company, Eix Diagonal Concessionària de la Generalitat de Catalunya, S.A., 100% controlled by Iridium, carried out the partial putting into service of the Diagonal Axis between the north of Vilafranca del Penedès and the south of Manresa, which was ten months advance over the forecast date.
The section put into service is 38 kilometres long, of which seven are completely new and the rest have been renovated. It is estimated that that final putting into service will take place around the middle of 2012.
The total forecast project investment comes to 397 million Euros, with a 33-year concession period. The project mainly contemplates the construction of eleven kilometres of dual carriageway and twenty-three kilometres of highway, together with the renovation of thirty-one kilometres of existing highway, nine tunnels and cut and cover tunnels with a total length of five and a half kilometres and a 760-metres long mixed bridge.
The completion of the Axis will improve communications between central Catalonia and the south of Barcelona by reducing travelling time between Manresa and Vilanova by thirty minutes.
