The Right Honourable Herb Gray Parkway is a design-build-finance-operate-maintain contract to connect the existing Highway 401 in Windsor, Ontario to I-75 in Detroit, Michigan by way of a new Canadian inspection plaza and bridge crossing being constructed by the Federal Government in Windsor (Gordie Howe International Bridge). Construction consisted of a new 10.9-km (6.8-mile), 6-lane highway, which includes interchanges, 11 cut-and-cover tunnels with 1.8 km (1.1 miles) of tunnel coverage, 331 access ramps, and 19 bridge structures. The Right Honourable Herb Gray Parkway is designed as a below-grade highway, which lowers the visibility and noise of the international commercial truck traffic from adjacent residential properties. The tunnels allow local traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists to cross the highway safely, minimizing disruption to the international traffic. The parkway also provides separate roads for local traffic, access to schools, neighborhoods, and shopping centers, as well as 20 km (12.4 miles) of new recreational trails.
