The Confederation Line project is the most significant infrastructure investment in the City of Ottawa’s history. It provides rapid and high-quality transit service and is one of the largest conversions of an existing bus rapid transit (BRT) network to light rail transit (LRT) lines to occur in North America. This state-of-the-art LRT project is comprised of a 12.6-km (7.8-mile) alignment, 13 stations, 2.4 km (1.5 miles) of tunnel, a 5.5-km (3.4-mile) widening of Highway 417, provision of 34 vehicles (capable of autonomous operation), systems (automatic train protection and automatic train operation), a 10,907 m2 (117,403-ft2) maintenance and storage facility, and a 30-year maintenance term.
