I-595 is an urban highway that services traffic volumes of 180,000 AADT, spans multiple cities and provides an important route for the public. The project included the reconstruction of 10.5 miles (16.9 km) of I-595 and 2.2 miles (3.5 km) of the Turnpike Highway, including the reconstruction, widening, and resurfacing of the I-595 mainline, widening and new construction of more than 60 bridge structures, as well as improvements to adjacent cross-roads, frontage roads, and ramps. The design and construction of toll road equipment and the construction of three new 10.5-mile (16.9-km) reversible express/counter flow lanes in the I-595 median, operated as managed lanes using variable tolls, was also included.
